Let’s Get Gleaning!

What is Gleaning?

“Gleaning is simply the act of collecting excess fresh foods from farms, gardens, farmers markets, grocers, restaurants, state/county fairs, or any other sources in order to provide it to those in need.” (USDA)

Why Glean?

Here at FRN we recognize gleaning as one of the most effective ways to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to partner agencies. Gleaning is not only effective but efficient, especially in large groups. Furthermore, it helps farmers cut down on cost by helping them save crops that otherwise would count as a loss.

Strong community connections with access to fresh produce is important now more than ever. In June 2021, FRN launched a new series of gleaning pilot programs to highlight and build connections with Atlanta's growing gleaning efforts and to train local students to become gleaning advocates in their own communities.

Check out our Atlanta Gleaning Initiative Impact Showcase to learn more about the outcomes and key learnings from our work with farmers, college students, and community partners to tackle food waste and insufficient food access in the metro Atlanta area.

How Can My Chapter start gleaning?

FRN chapters all across the US glean as part of their food recovery efforts, and we are so excited to have you join this amazing initiative! Check out FRN’s guide below to learn more about gleaning and how your chapter can get started.

A Guide to Gleaning: Food Recovery in Fields and Farmers Markets By: Cassie Olovsson

“Some of the foods we receive [from gleaning] are
things that would otherwise be too expensive to
buy…One of the great benefits of working with
farmers markets is getting fresh fruits and veggies
that are healthy.”
